How to Choose a Pack Size

Your torso length, not your height, determines your pack size. We recommend the following to determine yours:

  1. Tilt your head slightly forward to locate the bony bump at the base of your neck. (This is your 7th cervical (or C7) vertebra).
  2. Using a flexible tape measure, have someone measure starting at that spot and running down along the curve of your spine.
  3. Place your hands on your hips so you can feel your iliac crest, which serves as the “shelf” of your pelvic girdle. (It’s the first hard thing you feel when you run your fingers down from the sides of your ribcage.) Position your hands so your thumbs are reaching behind you.
  4. Have your friend finish measuring at the point where the tape crosses an imaginary line drawn between your thumbs. This distance is your torso length.
    • Small (15.0” - 17.0” torso)
    • Medium (17.0” - 19.0” torso)
    • Large (19.0” - 21.0” torso)
    • Tall (21.0”+ torso)
  5. If your measurement falls right in between sizes (for example, if you have a 17.0” torso, so you are right on the line between a Small and a Medium), we suggest you choose the larger torso size.

    Nice

I'm giving the pack 5 stars, but to be fair, I sold it after a single 5-day trip. Partially because my shoulder hurt a lot, partially because I won't need this capacity again for a year and a half. This pack was purchased with a single trip in mind.

First off, customer service was fantastic and responsive as they answered my question leading up to my initial order.

The pack is very well thought out and nicely built. The hip belts were fantastic. I love the way they tightened and the hip belt pocket were easy to use and nicely placed out of my way. The 55 liters of interior space was huge. The pack material is pretty cool and felt genuinely waterproof. It felt far more durable than other dyneema packs that I've owned.

As far as the should straps go; they were comfortable enough, though I wish they were longer and wider. As for load lifters are concerned, I'd like to have them. My shoulders hurt for the entire 5-day trip, which to be fair, I was pushing the 40lb limit of the pack for the first few days and may have made them sore just like any pack would have.

I liked the stretchy material on the front pocket, though a little more stretch would have been appreciated. I did not like the lower access flap to the pocket at all. I found it unnecessary and a hindrance when trying to use the full pocket.

Even though I sold the pack, I haven't ruled out purchasing another HMG pack in the future as updates are released.

    Great pack

Very lightweight and the fabric feels very durable. I have not used it on a hike yet but I loaded it with some gear and it feels awesome. Should fit everybody great if you measure for what size you need.

    Exactly what we wanted!

This purchase, an Unbound Large Men's, a 20-quilt in length long, and my wife purchasing the small unbound pack came about from a strong referral from our daughter. She and her group, lover Hyperlite, introduced us to it this summer on a Colorado Hut trip between Vail Pass and Leadville. All of the new gear is everything it was said to be and exactly what we were looking for. We just returned from another Hut Trip Yesterday, and the gear worked as it should.

The backpack I was looking for

I tried 4 different backpacks that where highly rated but this one fitted perfectly in my back. It rests right above my hips and low back. Is very comfortable and I love the fact that is truly 55 litters inside and the front and side pockets are extra space. That made a huge difference in accommodating all my gear perfectly.
