55L PACK, IDEAL FOR
- Wet, Wooded Environments
- Backpacking
OUR ORIGINAL BACKPACKING PACK
The Windrider 55 has made a name for itself as the ideal Appalachian Trail thru hiking pack with its massive mesh pockets that help to dry wet gear on the move, and its adaptable carrying capacity as supplies accumulate and dwindle along the route. Ideal for weekend, section, or thru hikes where resupply points are less frequent and/or for equipment flexibility. When the extra volume is not in use, the 55’s top can roll down enough to make the overall size of the pack similar to the 40, but that additional space can come in pretty handy when you need it.

Product Reviews and Questions
Nice Improvement!
After carrying too much weight on my last backpacking trip, I decided to do an about face. Most of my gear was already either "light weight" or ultralight but I clearly needed to do much more. I purchased the 55L Windrider and also tweaked other items I usually carry. The result was a much light, more comfortable pack. I was able to enjoy my time backpacking much more.
Not just for hiking
I love this backpack.
I purchased the 3400 Black Windrider a couple of years ago and have hiked hundreds of miles in it without any issues, mostly in the High Sierras and in the Cascades. I went with the black as we tend to hike some fairly rugged terrain (in some cases entirely off-trail). My nephew did get a small hole in his white Windrider 3400 on a particularly rugged draw. Other than snagging a small piece of my outer netting at some point, I haven’t had any issues.
Where this pack has unexpectedly shined for me though is with regular travel. Combined with the Hyperlite Pods, the backpack becomes highly modular and is able to meet the rigid carry-on restrictions for travel in Europe. Water proof, modular, light, easy to carry, it’s the perfect bag for carry-on travel.
So, whether for hiking or general travel, this bag pretty much goes wherever I do.
As for customer service, my only experience has been tangential. An Appalachian Trail through-hiker broke a strap. We were able to arrange for Hyperlite to send a replacement pack to our house in Roanoke, Virginia, and they got it to us before she arrived. What might’ve been a complicated transaction for some companies (as we were a third party) went very smoothly.
