OUR ORIGINAL BACKPACKING PACK

The Windrider 55 has made a name for itself as the ideal Appalachian Trail thru hiking pack with its massive mesh pockets that help to dry wet gear on the move, and its adaptable carrying capacity as supplies accumulate and dwindle along the route. Ideal for weekend, section, or thru hikes where resupply points are less frequent and/or for equipment flexibility. When the extra volume is not in use, the 55’s top can roll down enough to make the overall size of the pack similar to the 40, but that additional space can come in pretty handy when you need it.

My Go To Pack for Camping and Backpacking
I love this thing! For how minimalist it is, it is very comfortable and the perfect size for the trips I take. I've done 20+ mile days in the mountains of Montana loaded with around 30lbs and have no complaints. Definitely recommend!

    Comfy and Oh So Light!!
My friend convinced me to buy this bag based on the lightweight feature. It took a little convincing as it's just changing your mindset to a giant stuff sack vs a pack with a million pockets and features - that ultimately add weight! Used it for the first time on a 5 day backpack and fell in love. I honestly had MANY people ask me during that trip about the pack - I raved about it. Thank you!

    Perfection
I love my Windrider. The pack is comfortable, durable, and lightweight. The mesh is surprisingly durable and convenient. On top of loving my pack, Hyperlite went above and beyond in making sure my order arrived in time for my planned weekend excursion.

Overall it is a nice backpack, even though som of the straps seems a little flimsy and tbh som of the straps I don’t know what I am supposed use them for.

    Nice Improvement!

After carrying too much weight on my last backpacking trip, I decided to do an about face. Most of my gear was already either "light weight" or ultralight but I clearly needed to do much more. I purchased the 55L Windrider and also tweaked other items I usually carry. The result was a much light, more comfortable pack. I was able to enjoy my time backpacking much more.

The Windrider 55 was perfect for my three day, 40 mile section hike of the AT. This thing is super comfortable. Im already planning my next section hike.

    Does not meet my expectations

I am very careful with my things and treated my new backpack with special care, I have to realize that it is already after a short use in a catastrophic condition. I have no problem with a few stains that can develop over time on a white outer material, but this tops it all. The fibers seem to literally attract dirt even when I just walk by it. As a result, my backpack is already in an unsightly state. Seeing this after just one tour, I don't even want to imagine what it will look like after the second or third. Neither in the consultation nor on the website was this problem pointed out. In addition, the material is impossible to clean, as the dirt apparently penetrates so deeply into the fibers that you can hardly do anything about it.

Another point I would like to address concerns the supposedly durable material. After only two days in use, the upper material already had its first hole. This is very annoying. Although I have always used an additional rain cover to provide an extra layer of protection during predictable stresses, such as transport, this obviously did not help. This is totally unacceptable to me, especially since I haven't even used the backpack heavily in any way.

So far I'm very disappointed with the backpack, especially after spending so much time trying to find the right one for me.

    Not just for hiking

    I love this backpack.

I purchased the 3400 Black Windrider a couple of years ago and have hiked hundreds of miles in it without any issues, mostly in the High Sierras and in the Cascades. I went with the black as we tend to hike some fairly rugged terrain (in some cases entirely off-trail). My nephew did get a small hole in his white Windrider 3400 on a particularly rugged draw. Other than snagging a small piece of my outer netting at some point, I haven’t had any issues.

Where this pack has unexpectedly shined for me though is with regular travel. Combined with the Hyperlite Pods, the backpack becomes highly modular and is able to meet the rigid carry-on restrictions for travel in Europe. Water proof, modular, light, easy to carry, it’s the perfect bag for carry-on travel.

So, whether for hiking or general travel, this bag pretty much goes wherever I do.

As for customer service, my only experience has been tangential. An Appalachian Trail through-hiker broke a strap. We were able to arrange for Hyperlite to send a replacement pack to our house in Roanoke, Virginia, and they got it to us before she arrived. What might’ve been a complicated transaction for some companies (as we were a third party) went very smoothly.
