You Have to Know What You're Buying

I took the Mid 1 on my five day backcountry trip through East Fork in the Sawtooths and it performed as expected. The weight is obviously the largest attractor; with such minimal weight, you get a phenomenally well-constructed shelter. The setup is remarkably easy, and once you have it dialed in, it's probably the fastest I've ever been able to pitch and break camp.

The weather in the Sawtooths saw regular rapid temperature changes, and as with all single-wall tents, you will get a lot of condensation. I found that once I adjusted the two top vents, the problem was mitigated, but it’s still unavoidable in these types of climates.

There are plenty of other tents that will accomplish what the Mid 1 does, but I keep coming back to it for its simplicity, efficiency, and overall balance of performance.

Ultimately, what sets the Mid 1 apart is how well it disappears into your pack but shows up big when you need it. If your priority is going light without sacrificing too much livability or durability, this tent earns its place. I would recommend it to any serious backpacker who knows how to manage a single-wall shelter and values fast-and-light travel.

    Fast, easy, lots of features!

This is my 3rd trekking pole/dyneema tent and 1st from HMG. The other two left me wanting for a smaller footprint, inside door that hung from the top so it wouldn't reveal a gaping entry for bitey bugs, and strong storm door that wouldn't flap in the breeze. The Mid 1 delivered on all this with no weight penalty. It's easy and fast to set up (didn't need the pole extender), the guylines were easily adjustable so they weren't extending long beyond the footprint, the zippered stormdoor was easy to close from the inside and out, and the magnet to hold back the doors was a big plus that I didn't even know I needed. Bravo HMG!

After 8 nights I Love this Tent

The Mid 1 is a great tent. I've now used it for 8 nights in the Bob Marshall; Wilderness. This is my first One Person tent so it took me a few nights before I figured out the best way to organize the interior space. Once I got that dialed in I found the Mid 1 plenty roomy for my 6' length. I like the relatively small footprint -- I can utilize smaller rectangular sites that are much easier to find in the backcountry. And this tent is a breeze to set up so that it is snug. All in all I really like this tent and look forward to many more nights in the wilderness.

    Best Tent I've Ever Had

It's a single wall tent - there's going to be some condensation. Bring a small towel, it'll have plenty of uses. It's slighly lighter and a lot faster to set up than the Mid 1 with the insert, and that's the tradeoff.

That said, this tent is awesome. It's a palace! The interior is surprisingly huge. It's held up well and kept me dry in some solid early season storms in the Winds. Where it's frequently, you know, really windy. I haven't had mist spray in and it's been fine with getting hammered by wind. Coming from a poncho tarp, the only downside has been that it's harder to wear while doing all my laundry in town.
