3400 Porter
Starting at $389.00
The 3400 Porter faces eclectic gear closets and open schedules without fear! It’s the pack we recommend to adventurers that prioritize simplicity and functionality and don’t settle for one mode of travel. Ideal for weekend, section, or thru hikes where resupply points are less frequent and/or for equipment flexibility. When the extra volume is not in use, the 3400’s top can roll down enough to make the overall size of the pack similar to the 2400, but that additional space can come in pretty handy when you need it.
We designed the Porter for the expert ultralight backpacker or climber who moves fast, goes far and travels light. It’s ideal for shorter-duration adventures, where you’re sharing gear with your partner. Made from 100% waterproof Dyneema® Composite Fabrics (formerly Cuben Fiber), this backpack is highly durable and weatherproof. Use it with our Stuff Sacks for a nearly perfect waterproof kit.

Excellent Pack
I will use this for summer/fall backpacking and winter/spring ski touring. Unreal and versatile pack.
Super light
Due to COVID restrictions in Sydney, Australia, I haven’t been able to go anywhere to use the pack. I decided to do a 28km (17.4 mi) city/harbour/bush walk with my packraft to test it out yesterday.
The bag is super-light and a lot more spacious than I expected (I’m pretty confident that all my overnight stuff, along with my packraft will fit). I didn’t notice that I was carrying the pack for most of the day (I was carrying about 7kgs or 15lbs). At the end of the day I noticed that the straps were rubbing under my arms -I’ll have to look at how I’ve set up the straps to see if I can fix that.
Best part was when my bag accidentally rolled into the river -everything in it was perfectly dry!
I also purchased the stuff pocket and water bottle holder. These both came very much in handy. My paddle wouldn’t stay attached when using the side loops, but fit perfectly in the stuff pocket.
3400 porter on the Drift 100 Ultra Marathon
In January of 2020 I did a 100k ultramarathon ski race in Alaska pulling a huge gear sled. This was a training run for a race in Norway that requires pulling a fully loaded sled. It was super tough but all the extra gear made going quick basically impossible. I finished the race with an hour to spare before the 48 hour cut-off time. This winter with Covid making travel basically impossible and the Norway race and the Alsaka race cancelled, I looked into some other options. The Drift 100 mile race came up and I signed up. The problem was that this race required the same 48 hour finish but with the added distance of 100miles (rather than 100k). It also included 7k feet of total elevation gain and loss (rather than on a the flat Susitna & Yentna river beds). I knew I would need to change it up for this race and go as fast and light as possible. Unfortunately, the race required a list of gear that was quite extensive.
I really wanted to try and get my gear into a backpack rather than a sled. I looked at a ton of options and finally settled on the Hyperlite 3400 porter. It did not disappoint. I was able to fit my -10 degree down bag, 4 season bivy, air mattress pad, 2x 1L insulated water bottles, a down puffy, a shell jacket, a stove, pot, fuel canister, and quite a bit more random gear with lots of room to spare. I decided to get a large and a small pod to keep all of my random little things organized (food, batteries, spare headlamps, extra socks, etc. The system worked out so…
Super excited with my pack.
Super excited with my pack. I was a bit worried because I wasn’t able to try one on to see if everything felt good, but the sizing was great. I’ve only used it on one trip so far and it was by far the most comfortable pack I have ever owned. I would highly recommend this product! As an outdoor educator, I would trust this pack on my month long excursion with students.
