OUR CLOSE QUARTERS TRAIL PACK

The 2400 Southwest keeps you honest about packing smart and efficiently on weekend or section hikes where the supplies you may need to replace along the way are never too far out of reach.

When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up-close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

Hike or die

The quality is absolutely first rate. This pack is light and rugged. I generally have low expectations when it comes to modern designs. This company produced a pack that surprisingly exceeded my expectations. I tend to pack a wee more than is necessary, though I have my base weight dialed-in. The 2400 SW holds base plus 10 days of food comfortably. If I could change anything, it would be a bit heavier hip belt to accommodate even more weight. For those on the fence because of cost.., Its nice to support a company that prioritizes quality and cares about the outdoor community and our natural wilderness.

Outstanding, but.

I’ve had my 2400 Southwest for close to three years now and for the most part I wouldn’t change a thing. For the most part.

I’ve got two issues, both relatively minor I’m not overly fond of. The first is the Velcro closure and the way it latches onto expensive fleece and wool base layers whenever reach into the pack. I’ve been tempted to sit down with a razor blade and carefully cut the stitching holding the Velcro on. Second, I think the hole for the hydration hose would be better placed over one of the shoulder straps than in the center of the pack. Having it in the center the way it is eats up too much hose length, and having the hose constantly against my neck is annoying to say the least.

Overall though, great pack.

Fabulous pack!

I absolute love this pack! This is my first Hyperlite and I am in love! I bought this primarily for multi-day use, but am now planning on using it for snowshoeing this winter (thanks to its waterproof quality), and also for my longer day hikes, simply because of how comfortable it is regardless of how much gear you toss in!

I saw a previous review (a rather insulting one) from a pompous reviewer who stated those who only plan to hike shorter distances should “stick with their Ospreys”. I say, forget that jerk. Use whatever pack suits you and your needs best, and whichever one you find the most comfortable! This is a very versatile pack! Not only is there a good amount of compartment space, there are a lot of options for attaching gear to the outside of the pack as well. That being said, this pack also compresses down quite nicely for those times when you don’t have 40+ pounds to haul, yet you want to carry a lighter backpack.

I am excited to put many miles of outdoor happiness into this pack!

You get what you pay for...and then some

Purchased this pack a few years back after spending quite a while dialing down my gear in anticipation of some longer backpacking trips, and got to truly put it through its paces this summer on my thru hike of the Long Trail. In a very short summary, it's as close to a masterpiece as a backpack can be. But to elaborate further, I decided to list out some specific pros and cons.

Pros:

- Bombproof. This thing absolutely does not quit. As anyone who has done the long trail knows, there's a lot of fairly technical parts where your pack makes contact with rocks, roots, etc. After 270 miles of abuse, this thing looks like it did the day I got it...except now the white DCF is no longer quite so white. But especially compared to certain other UL pack brands that may or may not start with Z, the build quality on this thing is nothing short of sensational. Not a single seam, zipper, strap, or stitch has loosened or degraded in any way, and I know for a fact this thing can and will survive many, many more miles on trail. It might not be *the* absolute lightest UL pack out there, but in terms of material and build quality you'd be hard pressed to find something that manages to be this light while being so tough. In terms of dollars per mile, especially for someone who does a lot of hiking in technical environments, I genuinely cannot think of anything on the market which would outperform this pack, especially for the weight. Plus it's waterproof, meaning that my gear stored inside…

Great Design

Hyperlite packs show the amount of thought and experience that goes into their design and construction. Their simplicity is part of their success, but the little details are just as valuable. And no 'convenient' lengthwise zipper to bust - thank you. I'm really impressed, can't wait to try it out!
