Product Reviews and Questions
I got mine years ago when still made in the USA
They used to have 2 sizes of this. The small was way too small, the large could stand to be a little bigger, however, I combined it with a down pillow by Goosefeet gear and they work great together. My hyperlite pillow I have has since 2019 and it's still going strong. Easy to use and easy to wash. I can't say anything on the new ones they have outsourced to Mexico because I haven't used one.. I have, however, read some reviews and met one hiker last year where their's failed on the second week. (Zipper broke) Although expensive I've gotten a lot of use out of this product and continue to carry it. Like I said it pairs great with something like a 3oz down pillow. The combination really helped me get much better sleep on my thru-hikes.
Too small
So I own two of these from when this was offered in two different sizes. Looks like it's now only offered in one size, which seems to correspond to the larger of the two sizes when it was offered in two sizes (17x12 and 11x8). The 11x8 is useless. The 17x12 is just barely usable. A tiny person might find it okay, but I'm 6'5".
This is a great design and I'd give 5 stars if only it was large enough. The design is far better than all the other inflatable pillow options offered by other gear companies. It actually has the potential to feel like a real pillow.
However, even at 17" x 12", it's too small. The issue is that when you stuff a 17" long linear section to get it to the height you want, it ends up a fair bit shorter in practice when stuffed and the curvature/roll-off is too great for you head to rest stably. Plus, if you want more loft/height, you need to add more clothes or other items in it which makes it too stiff and increases the curvature and roll-off further. If you don't pack enough, it doesn't do much as a pillow.
This size might work for back sleepers that don't move around, but for stomach or side sleepers, it would be awesome if a larger size were available, For a FKT-oriented through-hiker where they are wearing everything they have, they might have difficulty stuffing a larger pillow but for shoulder season and winter camping, you're much more likely to have diversity of layers and other gear to give enough loft to a larger pillow and then get a much…
Great multi-purpose item
This product works great for keeping a few warm layers (gloves, fleece, puffy, beanie, etc) near the top and my pack and keeps them dry. Then doubles as a pillow at night. I love having multi-purpose items in my pack, l and this was a great addition.
Hyperlite Stuff Sack Pillow
Versatile.
Zipper failure on 1st trip.
So wanted to love this dual purpose pillow/stuff sack. Soft pillow side & water resistant, so I put my winter puffy & mittens/cap inside (ya never know-mountains in June). Unzip & the zipper comes right off! Thankfully I got it rethreaded back on, but zero trust in it staying on. When I got home, looked at my stuff sack where the zipper ends and there is a row of stitching so the two ends of the zipper do not come apart. On the pillow the seam/zipper does not meet where the stitching goes around the long end of pillow the zipper ends are just floating under the dyneema lip unsecured.
