Porter 85

I got this cause I needed a bigger pack than my Southwest 70 for a 12 night trip that requires a large bear can. This is great but I really would like an internal water bladder holder and external pockets like the SW models. An internal water bladder holds the water weight at the perfect point, side positions not so much and I don't like shoulder strap weight too much either. But this is the largest pack at this weight point and carrying capacity that is available anyplace. And, like all Hyperlite packs it is surprisingly comfortable despite what are relatively thin shoulder pads and hip belts and lack of load lifters. I also like the increased width of this pack compared to all other Hyperlite packs and think this would be useful for all larger packs. That is, the narrow design of the SW etc. maybe useful in some conditions, but it puts the weight up pretty high for the 70 models when fully loaded. The Porter brings it down a bit, on a same volume comparison.

It’s good! The only improvement I wish for is better reinforcement of the grab loop and daisy chains. They held but didn’t seem like they would take it again. I realize it’s grossly overloaded but there’s no other option for unassisted month long winter climbing trips in remote areas of the Himalaya.

First the negative. Hyperlite's FAQs describe waterproof fabric and taped seams. That's the same description for rain jackets and other gear I've owned that proved to be highly water resistant. I first wore my Hyperlite on a very rainy weekend and decided I"d test the water resistance without a pack cover or garbage bag liner. My gear got soaked. Hyperlite told me after the trip that "there are some spots like the bottom seam, and the horizontal seam above the shoulder straps which are not able to be sealed during production." (FYI that's a lot of seam in vulnerable places.) This still may be the right pack for you, but be aware that, unlike their FAQs infer, not all seams are taped and you'll have to take the same water protection steps as you do on less expensive packs.

Now the good: I ordered the Porter 85 because I periodically have winter and pack rafting trips that require high volume. I was very happy to find that the pack rolled down to about 40L for a snug, compact load. I love the simple design. The pack is sufficiently comfortable for such a light pack. I paired it with the bottle pocket, not knowing if I'd like having my water bottle hanging in front of me; it was comfortable and convenient.

I've had a Southwest 4400 for years and love it. Recently I've gone on longer trips require a bit more gear and more food. The Porter 85 accommodates that, especially by allowing my larger bear can (9.0x11.5 inches) to easily fit horizontally near the bottom of the pack. The overall design for all their packs serves well to carry different volume loads. This helps when you've gone through your food near the end of a 10 day trip, or if you need the pack for a day hike mid trip. I've added their stuff pocket, which is handy for lunch, filter, light jacket; most people buying this pack will want the pocket too. I've not had any durability issues with the Southwest, and I anticipate the Porter will be just as sturdy.

I just took the Porter on a 5 day trip. It is several pounds lighter than my previous 85 liter pack, which is very noticeable!It is light enough for shorter trips but will well do for 9 or 10 day trips also due to the large capacity. It is wide at the bottom so when full on a longer trip it won't tower over my head, which is a poor load carry for me. Even with a couple liters of water it carried quit well. The material the pack is made of seems very sturdy compared to a couple other lightweight packs I tried and water resistant/proof is nice so no pack cover needed. The waist belt is good and supportive enough for a good load. Waist pockets included (a bonus!). I do wish is had two things: an integrated mesh pocket system on outside, and a loop to hang a bladder and a hole for the hose to exit. All in all seems like a really great pack.
