OUR CLOSE QUARTERS TRAIL PACK

On rugged and tight trails, the 3400 Southwest is a flexible performer that can adapt and handle the way gear volumes change for weekend, section, or thru hikes. Ideal when resupply points are less frequent and/or for equipment flexibility is needed. When the extra volume is not in use, the 3400’s top can roll down enough to make the overall size of the pack similar to the 2400, but that additional space can come in pretty handy when you need it.

When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up-close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

10 days solo on the Colorado Trail

I used this pack for a 12 day trip in New Mexico where I was able to keep the weight to less than 35-36 pounds. Awesome!

I then used the pack on a 10 day self supported trip on the Colorado Trail which meant 18# food (including 2 bear bags). The pack weight with water and food was now at 45+ pounds which wasn't as nice. I am pretty thin so the hip belt dug into my iliac crests and I developed some wicked blisters, but as the days went by the pack lost weight and I had to be satisfied with wearing the pack lower down on my hips.

Summary: This pack is best when planned on resupplying on a regular basis but not so much when it is heavy. When the pack is light this thing is awesome. The hip belt pockets and especially the rear pocket are awesome and can hold a lot of gear that you want to get to quickly. When used with the pods this pack packs incredibly easily and efficiently. Love that. For super convenience I used the Versa ***** pack secured around the pack which held my lunch, snacks, and spoon. Love the Versa pack. I would just think twice if I were to carry this pack loaded more than 40 pounds.

Durable, reliable, comfortable

When I hunted for a new backpacking pack, the Southwest was the last on my list only because the shoulder straps looked too thinly padded for my protruding collarbone, and I worried that the bottom of the pack would create sores on my sacrum, even though the design of pack itself was exactly what I wanted. So, I tried other packs instead, women-specific ones with thickly padded straps and suspension systems and every kind of pocket and point of adjustability you can imagine - and I was miserable. My shoulders and back were bruised, and I wanted to throw the pack off as soon as possible.

After reading reviews and re-reading reviews, and after emailing Hyperlite's customer service reps for input, I finally trusted my gut and bought the SW. And wow, what a difference! It took a bit to find the right positioning on my body, but once I did the load was effortless to carry up and down high elevations. I don't remember what the weight was, but I had 3+ liters of water, a few days' worth of food for myself and my dog, a lightweight tent, camp sandals, sleep system, camp stove, clothing, rain poncho, and a few other necessities. So, not ultralight. But I felt great wearing it and had no issue hiking 10 miles a day with it through the mountains. My shoulders were still slightly sore by the end of the day, but nothing like before, and I realized that because of the extent to which my collarbones protrude, I will always have sore shoulders with heavy loads no matter the pack. It's just…

My favorite pack

I have always wanted an HMG pack. Now I've got one! I'm an avid winter and summer hiker/camper in the northeast and will be using my new Southwest 3400 for everything but ice climbing.

Great pack!

I have a couple herniated disks in my spine and have been working hard to get back into the woods backpacking with my son. I have had a pack for 20 years. It was so uncomfortable and noisy( sounded like I was carrying a pack full of squeaking mice), I decided that this would be an excellent time to upgrade. I spend plenty of time in the woods and knew I would be using my pack quite often so the money would be well spent.

Bottom line this pack is so comfortable and there is no noise! I can walk through the woods and hear only my footsteps. So pleasant!! All the straps stay tight and the stitches are TIGHT. I am super picky on quality and this thing is MADE TOUGH!

Hands down awesome pack worth the investment.

I have enough confidence with Hyperlite's products that I purchased my son his own pack. I know it's going to last him a very long time and reliably carry his gear for many miles.

Happy Trails!
