Break in on the AZT, a solid 4.5+ stars

We're 2 weeks in on the AZT so I'm getting to know the unbound 55. I was leary of the stretch mesh and side elastic cord retention system but it's proven to be highly functional and largely secure. The cord can be restrung to different pack loops which I did to hold 1 Liter smart water bottles better. Bottles stay put unless really bending over but not sure any pack could do that consistently. The stretch mesh can take a lot of day use stuff minimizing the need to open the top most of the day. You do have to watch a bit as when the pack is less than full as the tension to hold things in the mesh is less. Nothing's dropped out but just something to watch.

The hip pockets are large and hold a days worth of snacks, chapstick and small sun block. I do feel like I have to twist my torso to see and get things out of those pockets but maybe that's because I was high in the small pack range but not quite a medium.

The strap system and harness are a bit spartan is the only critique. It synches up well and carries higher range weights ok but it's not plush.

This is a great, maybe fantastic, on the go access pack for those not ready to get super small like Nashville or palente.

Has everything you need and more..

On the AT right now and I’m loving this pack. Keeps things that need to stay dry - dry.. The two side pouches - one carrying my tent and other water/more essentials -are just that. A LOT of stretch fabric on this pack lets you stuff the rest. Do find myself tightening the waste strap during the day but not enough to be a nuisance. Overall very happy with this pack - would recommend.

40 or 55?

Both the 40 and the 55 are stellar ultralight backpacks: comfortable, durable, waterproof, excellent design and easy to carry for long miles. Which one to get? The obvious answer is "depends on how much gear you are humping." If you need the capacity of the 55, go for it. The less obvious answer turns on whether you are carrying a bear canister. If yes, get the 55. It will carry a BV 475 or a GrubCan canister sideways or vertical with little difficulty and accommodate all your other gear as well. With the 40, I typically ended up with the canister outside the pack on top, often carrying the food stuffed in interstices inside to help with balance and then repacking at night for storage away from camp. Since I carry the GrubCan as a routine, if I could only have one pack it would be the 55. Hope this helps with your choice...

Outstanding on the Overland

Just came back from hiking 6 days on the Overland Track in Tasmania and could not be happier with this pack. It was perfect through torrential rain all the way through to high humidity and heat. Everything worked and packed seamlessly. Highly Recommend. The pods and sleeping bag were also exceptional.

Almost perfect!

I wanted to love this pack but it hurt my lower back. All the weight rests right on your sacrum, the hip belt doesn't have enough back padding to disperse the weight. Also, the shoulder straps could be made from a softer foam. I loved the bottom, front and side pockets—perfect sizes.
