Review of 2 and 4, desert backpacking and on snow
I’ve used both UltaMid 2 and 4 in many combinations. The 2 is super for desert backpacking, and fine, if a bit tight, for ski traverses. The 4 is not that much bigger (or heavier) than the 2, because the catenary cut yields a very low ceiling around the periphery (unless you dig a pit in the snow underneath). This is too bad because in other ways a 4 with a half inner tent is a great, light, luxury option for two people backpacking in a rainy, buggy place, or in the snow. But in that mode, the person on the outside edge has very little room to sit up etc. But … I guess you gotta suffer if you want to sing the blues. Even with a full inner or a tarp underneath, the UltaMid 4 is tight for three people snow camping, and very tight for four people in winter conditions, even with a pit beneath. One small added note: it really would be nice if the half inner had a zipper at the narrow end, rather than on the wide side, so that the person on the outer edge could get out to pee without crawling over the person on the inner edge.
