ULTRALIGHT in the extra light

This time of year, in this part of the world, backpackers everywhere are rejoicing in the extra hours of sunlight that make every day ripe for longer-lasting adventures. There’s no doubt we’re quite fond of the extra rays around here, too! But LIGHTER FOR LONGER has another meaning for us, and it’s one that any committed ultralight traveler knows well themselves.

Less weight, less effort, more comfort, more distance.

You could call it simple physics; we call it awesome.

"Achieving a low base weight has allowed for more positive experiences. It’s minimizing misery and maximizing enjoyment."

- CEO and HMG Founder, Mike St. Pierre

"I am comfortably lightweight and not maniacal about it. For me, it’s an investment in risk mitigation—almost like a savings account, but in reverse. I’ve got padding for additions and adjustments (and injuries, too). If I need to add something for safety, comfort, or weather, I don’t stress about it.

A low base weight breeds versatility, safety, and the confidence to lean harder into the unknown."

- Tina Currin

“When I compare my experiences when I first started hiking compared to now, I can see a huge boost in not only miles made, but the smiles I had along the way. Once you clear the haze and lighten your load, suddenly, things become a bit brighter around the edges.”

- Tyson Perkins

“Lowering my base weight has radically revolutionized the way I backpack. It has allowed me to be a better hiking partner for my dog. With a lighter pack, I am in a position to carry her extra gear and food while on a thru hike, or even all of her gear on hotter Summer days.”

- Christopher Johnson

“A low base weight has not only allowed me to hike farther in a day, but I believe it has also increased my longevity long-term and, therefore, the total miles I’ll be able to hike in a lifetime! I aim to protect my body and be able to continue to walk long distances as I age.”

- Taylor Bracher

“When I was introduced to backpacking, I carried a 50 lb pack into the wilderness on my first trip. I loved everything about it except for my pack weight and knew there had to be a better way. The journey to lowering my pack weight forced me to consider every item I placed in my pack and to put a premium on comfort on trail.”

- Samuel Martin

“Ultralight isn’t a sacrifice. Ultralight means analyzing every piece of equipment and utilizing it to its fullest potential so that you can push yourself outdoors. After all, this is supposed to be fun.”

- Dylan Suhr

“My most compact camera kit weighs in at 4 lb. Adding lenses will cost 2 lb per lens on average. This gets heavy fast, so it’s imperative for me to keep my base weight as low as possible. The guy in the back never gets the shot.”

- Steve DOOM Fassbinder
