Our preferred pack for backpacking in dense, heavily wooded trails in the roughest, toughest climates.
OUR CLOSE QUARTERS TRAIL PACK

On rugged and tight trails, the 3400 Southwest is a flexible performer that can adapt and handle the way gear volumes change for weekend, section, or thru hikes. Ideal when resupply points are less frequent and/or for equipment flexibility is needed. When the extra volume is not in use, the 3400’s top can roll down enough to make the overall size of the pack similar to the 2400, but that additional space can come in pretty handy when you need it.

When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up-close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

FLOP from Harpers 2021

Awesome Pack, just finished a FLOP from Harpers Ferry, Nov 13th 2021 ... Hit some bad weather many times and this Pack held tight in the rain / snow/ sleet keeping everything dry.... Extremely durable pack for sure.... Very lite, held all my gear & 4 days of food with plenty of room ....

All I had hoped for

I love my pack. Lots of expansion for big trips. It’s light and compresses for short day trips. It keeps things dry on wet trips. Looks stylish on sunny trips.

Excellent- light but tough

Took out my pack for a 17 mile backpack this past weekend and love it. Comfortable, lightweight but tough. Just what I was looking for. I had to carry a bear cannister where we went so attaching it up top with the Y strap worked great.

Highly recommend this pack.

3400 SouthWest

After owning several well known packs from other major companies I have to say this is my first HMG and best pack I've ever had! I am 6'2", 210lb and the large fits me like a glove! It's fit is true and contours to your body for the ultimate carrying experience. Sweat is present but not overwhelming. The water "resistance" is amazing. My 3400 Southwest has become my everything pack. Day hikes rolled all the way down or unrolled to 3 or 4 days no problem it will handle it! Hyperlite Mountain Gear is definitely my only go to for packs and accessories now.

10 days solo on the Colorado Trail

I used this pack for a 12 day trip in New Mexico where I was able to keep the weight to less than 35-36 pounds. Awesome!

I then used the pack on a 10 day self supported trip on the Colorado Trail which meant 18# food (including 2 bear bags). The pack weight with water and food was now at 45+ pounds which wasn't as nice. I am pretty thin so the hip belt dug into my iliac crests and I developed some wicked blisters, but as the days went by the pack lost weight and I had to be satisfied with wearing the pack lower down on my hips.

Summary: This pack is best when planned on resupplying on a regular basis but not so much when it is heavy. When the pack is light this thing is awesome. The hip belt pockets and especially the rear pocket are awesome and can hold a lot of gear that you want to get to quickly. When used with the pods this pack packs incredibly easily and efficiently. Love that. For super convenience I used the Versa ***** pack secured around the pack which held my lunch, snacks, and spoon. Love the Versa pack. I would just think twice if I were to carry this pack loaded more than 40 pounds.
