OUR CLOSE QUARTERS TRAIL PACK

If you’ve got a four-season trail habit, the 4400 Southwest has the volume needed for cold weather gear, food and fuel for a week, or additional travel tools like a packraft. Ideal for weekend, section, or thru hikes where resupply points are less frequent and/or bulkier equipment is required.

When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up-close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

    Huge, versatile, light, comfortable

I got the Southwest 4400 because I wanted more capacity to take my kids on winter adventures and longer trips in the warmer seasons, and this has been a fantastic pack for that, all while still weighing slightly less than my old 55L pack. I love how the roll top makes the pack shrink down to fit any volume nicely. I have recurring back and neck pain from getting t-boned while cycling ten years ago, and some packs make especially my lower back hurt, but this pack feels great. The only minor con in my opinion is that it's difficult to reach the side pockets to grab a water bottle, but I'm always with my kids, so no problem. I've been using it for nine months now, and about 20 wilderness adventures later, it's still in fantastic shape, and I totally love it! Highly recommended for a parent who needs lots of volume for backpacking with kids!

    Amazing pack

While it took me a little while to figure out how to pack, i love this pack. The wet bag style close closure on top worked great, and helps with compressing down all of my gear. I ditched my compression sack for my sleeping bag and everything fit great, with all kinds of room to spare. The huge external pockets kept their capacity after the bag was stuffed. There was plenty of room for my rain gear and other stuff i need to access quickly on the trail. While its a little pricey, this pack is built to last!

    Nice Pack

A short review would be to say this is one of the best packs I've ever used and I've been backpacking since the 1970's...I've seen and used a lot of packs and this is my current favorite.

I just finished my first hike with this pack. Graves Creek trail head to Dosewallips Trail head through Enchanted Valley and over the Anderson Pass. 34 miles in three days and two nights.

I'm the family Sherpa so I get to carry all the communal gear, thus I started with a 40 pound load which decreased daily as we ate. I exited with a 35 pound pack. The 4400 Southwest Pack carried this load well including over some creek crossings and over slippery log bridges. My entire load was inside the pack including a Bearikade Blazer bear cannister which has a 9" diameter and is 12" long. That bulky bear cannister fit inside the pack above the internal frame with the lid rolled down over it.

As with all sack style packs smaller items will get mixed about and one often ends up fishing around for stuff. Personally I have ordered one of Hyperlite's adhesive internal zipper pouches to use as an internal pocket to help alleviate this problem. There is a mesh pocket in the internal rear of the pack designed to hold a water reservoir which I should have utilized more...but, it was my first outing with this pack so I'll use it more next time, which is a three day hiking trip to Spray Park on Mount Rainier a week from now.

This is possibly the best pack I've ever seen or used.

Amazing pack with great build quality

The pack is honestly huge. I know it's a 70L but that doesn't do it justice. I'm 6'4 with long arms and can fit my arm and half my chest in it. Great build quality with a lot of cool bells and whistles. Would highly recommend
