OUR CLOSE QUARTERS TRAIL PACK

On rugged and tight trails, the 3400 Southwest is a flexible performer that can adapt and handle the way gear volumes change for weekend, section, or thru hikes. Ideal for weekend, section, or thru hikes where resupply points are less frequent and/or for equipment flexibility. When the extra volume is not in use, the 3400’s top can roll down enough to make the overall size of the pack similar to the 2400, but that additional space can come in pretty handy when you need it.

When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up-close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

Dream Pack!!!

I LOVEEEEE my pack, as well as the customer service I experienced while waiting for my pack. I was feeling really worried about the back order and delay on the production, but they rushed production while maintaining quality. I was able to take my pack with me for my AT Hike, and it was a spectacular pack. Water proof, lightweight, perfect amount of pockets. Dream Pack!!

Love this Pack, Very Comfortable.

I started with a WindRider 2400 but switched to the Southwest 3400. I prefer the solid material on the pockets to the mesh due to snagging in trees and brush. The SouthWest glides though the brush with no problem. I love the nearly waterproof pack paired with the Hyperlight pods for a dry and balanced load. I stand at 5'11" and only weigh around 160 lbs. which leaves me with just about no hips. The Hyperlight packs (both the WindRider and Southwest) fit me great and the majority of the weight rests on my hips. I don't have to constantly fiddle with my belt to sit correctly like all my other packs. I can even use this for fast-packing by cinching it a bit tighter and the load rides perfectly (no bounce). I decided to go with the 55 liter over the 40 liter due to being able to roll it down to the same size for less than 2 oz. additional weight. This allow for that bulky winter gear. The explanation for the 4 star review vs a 5 star is due to the Velcro closure at the top of the opening to the main body of the bag. There is no need for this as I can see, it is loud as can be when accessing your belongings (can be a real issue when camping close to others. The worst thing about the Velcro, it will damage expensive gear by snagging it while inserting or removing items from bag. I hope HMG will consider removing the Velcro.

Hyperlite 3400 Southwest Delivers!

Have taken this backpack out on trail, half full, and have been working up my strength for longer distances. What usually gives me much back pain using other backpacks, I am not experiencing with this backpack. I have been pleasantly surprised by its comfort and how it forms to my body.

Passing It Along

I just purchased this Southwest 3400 for my son, I’ve had my own for about three years now, and absolutely love it!! My son and I backpack every 2 to 3 months in the Carolina Mountains, 2 to 3 day trips. He’s had a granite gear crown 60, but has been eyeing my Southwest every trip, LOL. I just surprised him with his own Southwest 3400, we will be breaking it in next month on another backpacking trip in the Roan Highland Mountains, can’t wait.
