Excellent quality tarp, not great for taller hikers.
Tarp itself is outstanding. 100% recommend for reasonably sized folks. If you’re 6’6+, you may not have enough spare material to create decently rain-resistant pitches. I’d love to see a larger square tarp option.
Many improvements over my old Silnylon tarp
I’ve used a silnylon flat tarp for most of my trips for eight years now, and upgraded to the HMG this fall. I’m really impressed that something so simple could be so improved. The fabric doesn’t wet out, so it doesn’t sag during the night. Shake it dry before packing. It packs plenty small, I’ve tried folding and stuffing. I’d say I prefer folding, if wind and etc allows. Stuffing creates tiny creases, which keep you from pitching it tight until the creases flatten back out. Folding also takes up less space- this may break in over time, not sure. The linelocks make setting up and tensioning really smooth. I’m super pleased with it!
Ultralight versatility!!
We use our tarp both for a fly on our Echo II insert and as a cooking shelter with our Ultamid 4. When you are carrying enough gear on you back for multiple days in the backcountry with your family and only 2 of your 5 person team are carrying any significant weight... every ounce. A versatile piece of well made, ultralight gear, so quick to pitch in a hurry on trail to provide a quick rain shelter or windbreak for lunch.
We love it!!
All I thought it would be
Used it for the first time this weekend. Got about 7 inches of snow, and I was nice and dry. The weight of the snow pulled one of the stakes out of the wet soft ground I put it in and the tarp fell on me in the middle of the night. It was easy to put back up and through it all I still stayed dry! It's very light and very strong.
Everything it claims to be
Great design and construction!
