4400 Southwest
$390.00
If you’ve got a four-season trail habit, the 4400 Southwest has the volume needed for bulkier cold weather gear, food and fuel for a week, or additional travel tools like a packraft. Ideal for four-season, weekend, section, or thru hikes where resupply points are less frequent and/or bulkier cold weather gear is required.
When the route is thick with vegetation, requires the occasional up and over immovable objects, and calls for “suck in your gut and shimmy through” type moves, the Southwest is the backpack you want up-close and personal. This pack family is made specifically for tough adventures that would rip most other ultralight-style packs to shreds.

Pros and Cons
I've used this pack on a handful of winter trips since purchasing it last fall. Generally, I'm happy with it, but there are some pros and cons.
Pros:
- The build quality is excellent. I expect this pack to last a long time.
- I like the fact that I can cinch down the pack to accommodate the load I'm carrying through the combination of the roll top and external straps.
- The capacity is more than generous. I can't imagine ever needing to fill the main compartment.
- Considering the burly construction and extra straps and features, the pack is very light.
Cons:
- The hip belt and shoulder straps are extremely difficult to adjust. I have literally had to take the pack off to adjust them before putting it back on. I hope they will loosen up some over time.
- The generally unstructured nature of the back panel makes it necessary to be careful about how to pack things that will be in contact with my back. There's really no airflow, so I expect this pack to be hot in warm weather. I don't think either of these things are unique to this HMG pack, but they are differences I've noticed compared to my other backpacks.
Overall, I'm a happy customer.
The company fixed the issue with my pack
The spacing was off originally with the shoulder straps. I sent it back and they built me a new 4400 Southwest. No complaints after.
Best pack ever
I have taken this pack into the mountains and canyons leading groups of students for 2-4 weeks. The accessibility, weight, comfortability, and durability is top of the class. I don't think I'll switch to any other pack for a long time. Keep up the excellent work!
Great pack
This pack is amazing. Very high quality and very light. The quality is excellent. Haven’t actually used it , but had it on walking around the neighborhood.
